Tell us a little bit about you. What’s your background, and what do you do at Cherry Godfrey?
I grew up in Bognor Regis on the south coast of England. Before joining Cherry Godfrey, I worked for HSBC bank (a role I began when I left school at 16). As I progressed through my career I relocated from the south coast and had positions in Birmingham, Warwickshire, and other places - I even had a brief stint in Alderney as the Branch Manager of the island’s HSBC bank!
I’ve now relocated to Guernsey on what (initially) was an 18-month plan. That plan changed when I met my partner Emma; we’ve just moved into our first home together with our cats Derek and Meredith (she chose the names, just to be clear!).
In terms of my working life at Cherry Godfrey, I’m a Mortgage & Life Insurance Adviser. A typical day can range from helping a first-time buyer find out what sort of property price they can afford, to helping a family ensure that they are suitably protected (just in case the worst were to happen).
Whether my clients need help with reviewing their mortgage or insurance needs, I will always look to provide friendly and impartial advice tailored to what’s important to them. No two clients are ever the same - and I want to ensure that my clients leave our meeting feeling like they have been truly valued. With this in mind, I always complete a full fact find of their circumstances before making any recommendations or providing advice.
How have early professional experiences shaped your career?
As I mentioned briefly earlier, I joined the financial services world straight after leaving school as a fresh-faced 16 year old - and I’ve been there ever since! Starting out in the South Coast of England and then moving around a fair bit, I have built up experience in many different roles in different locations (both in mainland U.K. and the Bailiwick of Guernsey).
Throughout my career I’ve always had a pull towards helping people - and I’ve always had a real passion for properties - so becoming qualified to advise clients as they take their first steps onto the property ladder was a real achievement for me.
I have now been advising clients on their mortgage and insurance needs for four years – and I love it just as much now as I did when I started the role.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced at work – and how did you overcome it?
Advising clients during a global pandemic is definitely up there! My main priority during that time was helping my clients keep things in perspective rather than getting caught up in the noise being made on the news and through the “Guernsey grapevine”. By working closely with my clients and my team we overcame the initial challenges that arose from adjusting to our “new normal” and have come out the other side stronger as a result.
What values have been the most important to you, both personally and professionally?
I am a caring person and supporting other people is at the forefront of everything I do, both in and out of work.
I believe that anyone can achieve anything if they want it enough and work hard. Make solutions not excuses!
If you had to choose one problem to fix – something that people in your industry/niche commonly face – what would it be?
“How much can I borrow?” “I’ve seen this house that I really like but I have no idea if I can afford it.” “How much are my legal fees going to cost?” “My bank gave me this quote but I don’t understand it”.
These are all comments that I hear on a daily basis from both first-time and even experienced buyers looking to buy their dream home.
Navigating the minefield that is buying a property can be a daunting experience and looking online only to find pages of jargon doesn’t make it any easier. I went through the scary first-time buyer journey myself a few years ago; and, in hindsight, I wish I’d had someone to talk me through how everything works at a level I could’ve understood. It would have really helped to assuage any doubts and worries.
As such, that level of service is exactly what I aim to provide to each and every one of my clients. Whether you are a first-time buyer looking to take your first step onto the property ladder or an experienced property investor looking to expand your portfolio, my role is to be that friendly face who can answer your questions and guide you through the home-buying journey: from the initial chat right up until you have been given your keys.
No question is a silly question, and whether it’s telling you how much you can borrow, finding the right mortgage for you or completing a mortgage application on your behalf, you can rest assured that I will be on your side.
What do you love about Cherry Godfrey?
For me, the main positives that come with working at Cherry Godfrey are the shared values and support: I feel I’m empowered to put my full attention and energy into helping my clients, rather than having to overcome barriers and deal with the day-to-day distractions you find in a lot of work places.
Cherry Godfrey’s guiding principle – that the customer must always come first – very much aligns with my own values, and I love the fact that if I feel there is a better way for us to help our customers then I can simply make the change (without having to spend hours justifying it to various departments).
We are a small but close-knit team: we love what we do, and that helps us be at our very best for both customers and colleagues.
Thanks, Luke – insightful answers and great to learn more about your work. Now for some fun! What are your top three podcasts or books?
I’m not much of a podcast person; I prefer to read, though not always books! I read widely on LinkedIn (delving into articles on property, insurance, pensions, investment markets and more). In a world that’s been turned on its head by Covid-19, I like to keep up with the ever-changing markets and keep my clients updated.
Outside of work, you can’t beat good old Harry Potter! I’ve read the books from start to finish at least four times…
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I love being outdoors and exploring the beautiful island of Guernsey with my partner Emma. Water sports have always been a passion of mine and I used to race sailing dinghies competitively (both locally in the U.K. and at international events). Nowadays I’m more of a “fair weather sailor” but have recently got into paddle boarding – I particularly enjoy paddling around the beautiful bays on the north and west coasts of Guernsey. I’m also hoping to pick up some windsurf kit very soon.
I am really into football, although bad knees have turned me into a watcher rather than a player! I am a Liverpool FC fan and have complete confidence that last season was just a blip and we will be back to winning many trophies in no time at all…….!
